Cloud flexibility vs bundled VPS operations
Hetzner vs OVHcloud VPS: Which Operating Model Fits?
Hetzner Cloud and OVHcloud VPS can both run a self-hosted application, but they make you buy and operate it differently. The useful comparison is not a made-up score. It is the full server, network, backup, location, and migration decision.
Facts checked against official provider documentation on October 24, 2026.
Short answer
Choose by workload, not by a universal winner
Hetzner Cloud fits when
You want hourly billing with a monthly cap, short-lived environments, API-driven infrastructure, or a choice between shared and dedicated virtual CPU plans. Remember that an allocated server continues to bill while powered off and that Primary IPv4 is a separate resource.
OVHcloud VPS fits when
You expect an always-on public server and value a package that includes Standard daily backup and anti-DDoS protection. The tradeoff is a more conventional VPS lifecycle, with location changes and downgrades requiring a new service and migration.

Hetzner vs OVHcloud at a glance
This table compares the operating contract rather than a temporary promotional price. Exact plans, taxes, currencies, and regional availability can change, so confirm the final checkout before ordering.
| Decision factor | Hetzner Cloud | OVHcloud VPS |
|---|---|---|
| Product shape | Cloud servers with shared or dedicated virtual CPU categories and separate infrastructure resources. | Packaged VPS tiers with server resources and several operational services included. |
| Billing trigger | Hourly billing up to a monthly cap. Billing continues while the server exists, even when it is powered off. | Advertised as monthly VPS plans. Use the regional checkout for the exact term, currency, and tax treatment. |
| Public IP | Primary IPs and servers are billed separately. Primary IPv6 is free; Primary IPv4 is a paid resource. | The package is designed as a public VPS. Check extra-IP availability and pricing for the selected location. |
| Automatic backup | Optional. Hetzner documents seven rotating backup slots at 20 percent of the server price. | Standard automatic backup is included, created daily, and retained for 24 hours. Premium seven-day history is optional. |
| DDoS package | Do not infer application protection from the server plan. Evaluate network and application controls for your threat model. | Anti-DDoS protection is explicitly included with the current VPS range. |
| Location change | An existing server cannot change location. Create a new server from a current snapshot or backup. | An upgrade stays in the same datacentre. A different datacentre or downgrade requires a new service and migration. |
| Best operational fit | Temporary environments, automation, granular infrastructure choices, and teams that already manage backup and security layers. | Always-on public services where included backup and DDoS protection remove two separate setup decisions. |
Compare total monthly cost, not the first number
A low starting price is useful only if both baskets contain the same operational requirements. Build one basket for each provider before you decide.
Hetzner cost basket
- Selected shared or dedicated virtual CPU server
- Primary IPv4 if the workload needs public IPv4
- Optional seven-slot backup or separately billed snapshots
- Traffic above the allowance for the selected server and location
- Your own monitoring, application protection, and off-provider backup
OVHcloud cost basket
- Selected monthly VPS tier in the required region
- Standard daily backup and anti-DDoS already included
- Premium backup, snapshots, extra IPs, or external storage if needed
- Operating-system or control-panel licences where applicable
- Your own monitoring, application security, and off-provider backup
Important: A backup retained for 24 hours is useful for a recent failure, but it is not a complete retention policy. Keep a separate, tested copy outside the server account for irreplaceable data.
Which provider fits your workload?
Development, test, and short-lived servers
Hetzner's hourly model is easier to align with a server that you create for a test and then delete. Powering it off does not stop billing, so automation must remove resources that are no longer needed. Also check for retained Primary IPs and snapshots, because those can continue to bill after the server is gone.
Always-on websites and self-hosted services
OVHcloud's bundled Standard backup and anti-DDoS protection reduce initial configuration choices for a continuously running public service. That does not make the application managed: you still own updates, access control, logs, monitoring, database consistency, and restore testing.
Private or IPv6-first infrastructure
Hetzner lets a cloud server use no public IP, only IPv6, only IPv4, or both, subject to documented restrictions. This can avoid a paid IPv4 resource for an IPv6-capable workload or keep an internal server on a private network. Verify dependencies first because third-party services and administrative access may still require IPv4.
Location-sensitive deployments
Choose the location before deployment. Hetzner documents locations in Europe, the United States, and Singapore, while OVHcloud offers datacentres and Local Zones across multiple regions. OVHcloud also notes that some features are unavailable in Local Zones. Compare the exact location, feature set, legal needs, and user latency rather than the provider's total location count.
Migration checklist between Hetzner and OVHcloud
- Inventory dependencies. Record ports, DNS, certificates, scheduled jobs, volumes, databases, email delivery, and allow lists.
- Create the target independently. Match architecture, storage, operating system, firewall rules, and required public IP version.
- Restore safely. Use an application-aware database dump or replication method, then copy persistent files and secrets through a secure channel.
- Test before DNS cutover. Validate the site, background workers, outbound email, backups, monitoring, TLS, and external integrations against the target IP.
- Cut over with a rollback window. Lower DNS TTL in advance, make the final data sync, switch traffic, and keep the source available until production checks pass.
- Delete deliberately. Remove the old server and any separately billed IPs, snapshots, backup options, or storage only after the rollback period.
Make the decision in five questions
- Will the server be temporary, or run continuously?
- Do you need a public IPv4 address?
- Is a daily 24-hour restore point enough, or do you need longer independent retention?
- Is included anti-DDoS protection a package requirement?
- Could you rebuild the service in a different location without an in-place move?
If flexibility and resource-level control dominate, start with Hetzner Cloud. If an always-on VPS with included Standard backup and anti-DDoS is the simpler contract, start with OVHcloud. Price the exact basket before committing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Hetzner or OVHcloud cheaper?
There is no reliable answer from the headline price alone. A Hetzner Cloud total can include the server, a separately billed Primary IPv4, optional backups or snapshots, and traffic beyond the included allowance. An OVHcloud VPS bundles Standard automatic backup and anti-DDoS protection, while premium backup, snapshots, extra IPs, licences, and other options can add cost. Compare the same resources and recovery setup in each checkout.
Does Hetzner or OVHcloud include automatic backups?
OVHcloud says its current VPS range includes a Standard automatic backup created daily and retained for 24 hours. Hetzner backups are optional, use seven rotating slots, and are billed at 20 percent of the server price. Neither replaces an independent off-provider backup for important data.
Which provider is simpler for DDoS protection?
OVHcloud explicitly includes anti-DDoS protection with its VPS range, so that requirement is part of the package decision. Do not assume that either provider removes the need for application security, rate limits, updates, monitoring, and tested recovery.
Can I move a Hetzner or OVHcloud server to another location?
Do not plan on an in-place location move. Hetzner documents creating a new server in the target location from a current snapshot or backup. OVHcloud states that upgrades stay in the same datacentre and that changing datacentre or downgrading requires a new service and data transfer.
Can I migrate directly between Hetzner and OVHcloud?
Yes, but treat it as an application and data migration rather than a portable provider snapshot. Build the target server, restore or synchronise data, verify services and TLS, lower DNS TTL before cutover, switch traffic, and keep the old server until validation is complete.
